PARLIAMENT: The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries has requested UGX17 billion to establish and rehabilitate piggery and poultry breeding infrastructure on government ranches, as part of efforts to boost pork and chicken production in Uganda.
The request was presented by the Minister of State for Animal Husbandry, Bright Rwamirama, while appearing before Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture to defend the Ministry’s 2026/27 National Budget Framework Paper.
Rwamirama told legislators that the proposed funding would support the establishment and renovation of livestock breeding and production infrastructure on government farms and ranches, with a particular focus on piggery and poultry facilities.
“The focus will be on constructing piggery and poultry structures to support rapid breeding and increased production of high-performing breeds,” Rwamirama said.
He added that the ministry plans to develop key livestock infrastructure, including breeding paddocks, spray races, sheds, valley tanks, and facilities for intensive disease control.
“The total estimated cost for these interventions is approximately UGX17 billion,” he noted.
