A 72-year-old man has been charged with aggravated defilement after appearing before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mukono over allegations that he sexually abused his 15-year-old granddaughter, according to the Uganda Police Force.
Police identified the accused as Fred Matovu, a resident of Kasala Village in Kasawo Sub-county, Mukono District. Investigators allege the offences occurred over a period ending in June 2026 while the girl was under his care. The case was reported after the teenager disclosed the alleged abuse to a teacher during a school meeting on 30 June, prompting police investigations.
“We commend the school for creating a safe space for the child to speak out. The Uganda Police Force urges members of the public to report all cases of child abuse immediately. Protecting children is a collective responsibility,” Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer l, Luke Owoyesigyire said in a statement issued on Friday.
Police said the survivor has received medical care and is undergoing psychosocial support.
Following investigations, prosecutors charged the suspect with aggravated defilement under Section 116(3) and (4)(c) of the Penal Code Act, Cap. 128.
The accused appeared before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mukono on Friday, where the case is expected to proceed through the judicial process.
Under Ugandan law, a criminal charge is an allegation, and the accused is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
