NAMUGONGO– Kasese Catholic Diocese is set to lead the 2026 Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations at Namugongo.
The diocese last animated the event in 2005 under the leadership of the late Rt. Rev. Egidio Nkaijanabwo.
A 13-member central organizing committee has been inaugurated in Kasese Municipality to spearhead the planning efforts.
The committee, chaired by Rev. Fr. John Baptist Kule, will coordinate all logistics, mobilization, and community engagement ahead of the June 3, 2026 celebration.
Church leaders are viewing this opportunity not only as a spiritual honor but also as a platform for Kasese to demonstrate its unity, cultural richness, and organizational strength on a national stage.
The event is expected to attract thousands of pilgrims from across the country and beyond, placing Kasese firmly in the national and regional spotlight.
Martyrs’ Day is commemorated annually at Namugongo and rotates among Uganda’s four ecclesiastical provinces Kampala, Tororo, Gulu, and Mbarara. Kasese will assume hosting duties from Lugazi Diocese, which will lead the 2025 celebrations.
With the organizing committee now in place, attention is turning toward resource mobilization, community involvement, and coordination with various Church institutions to ensure a vibrant, spiritually uplifting, and memorable national celebration.
