The Kenyan Senate has officially today commenced the long-anticipated two day impeachment hearing for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Just last week, the National Assembly voted to impeach him on 11 different charges.

Gachagua has firmly denied all allegations presented by Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye, asserting his innocence.

To remove him from office, a two-thirds majority is required by law.

The accusations against him include corruption, undermining the government, and inciting ethnic tensions.

Gachagua was a key ally of President William Ruto during their successful 2022 election campaign, playing a crucial role in securing significant support from the central Kenya region.

However, their relationship soured, leading to shifting political dynamics.

Following widespread protests against tax hikes that resulted in over 50 fatalities, Ruto dismissed many cabinet members and brought in opposition figures to form a unity government.

As lawmakers prepare to present their case to the Senate, Gachagua is set to defend himself tomorrow (October 17, 2024), ahead of the vote.
