The Pacific island nation is the first country to usher in the New Year 2026, with Christmas Island (Kiritimati) being the very first place on Earth to bid farewell to 2025.
While much of the world waits for the clock to strike midnight on December 31, 2025, some countries welcome the New Year hours earlier due to their geographical location and time zones. This difference is determined by the International Date Line, which runs through the Pacific Ocean and decides when each country enters a new day and a new year.
Because of its position just west of the International Date Line, Kiribati becomes the first nation to step into 2026. While many parts of the world are still in the morning or afternoon of December 31, people in Kiribati are already celebrating the start of a brand-new year.
Kiribati Leads the World Into 2026
Kiribati tops the list of countries that celebrate the New Year earliest. Its Line Islands, particularly Kiritimati (also known as Christmas Island), operate on UTC+14, the world’s earliest time zone. As a result, the New Year arrives there significantly ahead of most other regions—at around 2:00 pm UAE time and 3:30 pm Indian Standard Time.
While people in many countries are still going about their day on December 31, residents of Kiribati have already welcomed 2026 with celebrations and festivities.
Following Kiribati, New Zealand is next to enter the New Year, with cities such as Auckland and Wellington celebrating roughly 90 minutes later. At the other end of the timeline, American Samoa and the Howland and Baker Islands are among the last places in the world to ring in the New Year, effectively concluding the global countdown.
Social Media Buzz and Global Wishes
As Kiribati welcomed 2026, social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) were flooded with New Year wishes. Many users sent greetings and shared interesting facts about the country. One post read, “Happy New Year to everyone in the Kiribati Islands! Kiribati is the only country that exists in all four hemispheres.” Another user wrote, “Sending a heartfelt Happy New Year to the people of Kiribati. May you enjoy health, peace, and prosperity, just as your national motto says: ‘Te Mauri, Te Raoi ao Te Tabomoa.’”
