KAMPALA, Uganda : The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) will hold a one-week retreat for its newly elected Members of Parliament to guide them on the party’s ideology and national agenda.
The training will take place at the National Leadership Institute Kyankwanzi from April 7 to April 15, 2026. It will bring together new MPs, returning legislators, and independent MPs who are willing to work with the NRM.
According to NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong, all participants must first report to Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on April 6 for registration and COVID-19 testing before traveling to Kyankwanzi.
He explained that the retreat is part of the party’s tradition to help MPs connect, understand government priorities, and align with the NRM’s direction.
The meeting will also include top party leaders, members of the Central Executive Committee, and cabinet ministers who are also MPs.
According to Todwong, about 72 independent MPs have been identified, and at least 40 have already agreed to cooperate with the NRM. More are expected to join before the retreat begins.
The party has also invited opposition members who may wish to attend, even giving room for one of them to present views on the role of opposition in national development.
NRM Deputy Secretary General Rose Namayanja Nsereko said the retreat will focus on preparing leaders to protect national progress and move Uganda towards a higher middle-income economy.
Topics will include party ideology, governance, security, regional politics, and economic strategy, especially the NRM’s “Musevenomics” approach. Other areas include infrastructure, agriculture, human development, and the role of Parliament.
She added that special attention will be given to first-time and younger MPs to help them better understand the party’s principles.
Party officials say the Kyankwanzi retreat is important for guiding the new Parliament and strengthening unity within the ruling party.
