MTN Uganda has successfully concluded the MTN Half Year Mug at Entebbe Club, bringing to a close a memorable week of golf that combined elite professional competition, amateur excellence, and a renewed commitment to the future of the sport in Uganda.

The tournament attracted a field of 210 golfers across amateur, senior, guest, and professional categories, making it one of the largest corporate golf events held in the country this year. The event also marked the culmination of the inaugural leg of the newly launched MTN Pro-Tee Series, a significant addition to Uganda’s professional golf calendar that was introduced earlier this month through a partnership between MTN Uganda and the Uganda Professional Golfers Association (UPGA).

The MTN Pro-Tee Series was established to create a more structured and competitive pathway for professional golfers by introducing a season-long competition format that rewards consistency, excellence, and sustained performance. Over four days of professional competition, Uganda’s leading golfers competed in a demanding format that raised the standard of competition and set the tone for what is expected to become a flagship series for professional golf in the country.

Speaking during the event, MTN Uganda Chief Financial Officer Andrew Bugembe said the success of both the MTN Pro-Tee Series and the MTN Half Year Mug reflected MTN’s continued commitment to supporting platforms that create opportunities and unlock potential.

” Our first partnership with Entebbe Club focused on strengthening the foundations of the game through infrastructure development. Together, we invested in facilities such as the MTN Pod and improvements around the clubhouse to enhance the experience for members and visitors while restoring the club’s standing as one of Uganda’s premier golfing destinations. As we renew this partnership, our focus shifts towards growing the game itself by making golf more inclusive and creating opportunities for both amateur and professional players. The introduction of the MTN Pro-Tee Series is a reflection of that commitment and marks an exciting new chapter for the sport,” said Bugembe.

The week produced several memorable moments, none more dramatic than professional golfer Abbey Bagalana’s stunning hole-in-one at the 154-yard par-three 12th hole, a shot that quickly became the talking point of the tournament and drew admiration from players and spectators alike.

When the final scores were tallied, Richard Mucunguzi emerged as the overall winner after producing an outstanding round of 65 nett to claim top honours from the highly competitive field. Across the various categories, golfers delivered impressive performances that reflected the growing depth and quality of golf talent in Uganda.

The ladies’ competition was equally competitive, with Anne Abeja securing victory in Ladies Group A while Hellen Kisinde claimed top honours in Ladies Group B. Among the men, Saidi Kirarira emerged victorious in Group A, Philemon Akatuhurira claimed Group B, and Daniel Kalungi topped Group C. Michael Monne was crowned Seniors Winner, while Eric Kawere emerged as the leading guest golfer.

The tournament also celebrated excellence in individual skills contests, with Peace Kabasweka and Abel Okuna claiming the longest drive honours in the ladies’ and men’s categories respectively, while Pamela Tumusiime and Bbaale Yunus demonstrated exceptional precision to win the nearest-to-the-pin competitions.

A major highlight of the closing celebrations was the ceremonial renewal of the partnership between MTN Uganda and Entebbe Club. The agreement extends a relationship that has played a significant role in advancing golf in Uganda and strengthening Entebbe Club’s position as one of the country’s premier golfing destinations.

Commenting on the renewed partnership, Eng. Jacob Byamukama, Chairman of Entebbe Club, welcomed the continued collaboration and praised MTN Uganda’s contribution to the growth of the sport.

“MTN Uganda has been a valued partner in our journey to grow the game of golf and create meaningful experiences for golfers at all levels. This renewal reflects a shared vision for the future and gives us confidence that together we can continue to elevate the standard of golf, attract more participation, and create opportunities for the next generation of players,” said Eng. Byamukama.

While the initial phase of the partnership focused on infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing the club experience and strengthening facilities for members and guests, the new agreement will place greater emphasis on the development and promotion of golf itself. Particular attention will be given to creating opportunities for professional golfers alongside amateurs, with the MTN Pro-Tee Series serving as a key platform for advancing competitive golf in Uganda. Through future editions of the MTN Quarterly Tee and the MTN Grand Tee, the partnership will continue to support talent development, increase participation, and strengthen the pathway between amateur and professional golf.

The successful conclusion of the MTN Half Year Mug and inaugural MTN Pro-Tee Series leg signals an exciting new chapter for golf in Uganda. With additional MTN Pro-Tee events scheduled later in the year and growing support from partners and stakeholders, the future of professional and amateur golf continues to look increasingly bright.

As MTN Uganda deepens its investment in sporting excellence and community engagement, initiatives such as the MTN Pro-Tee Series and MTN Half Year Mug demonstrate the transformative role that partnerships can play in nurturing talent, expanding opportunities, and driving the growth of sport across the country.
