NANSANA, Uganda : MTN Mobile Money Uganda Limited, in partnership with Stabex International Limited, has launched a new boda boda fuel incentive campaign aimed at driving the adoption of MoMoPay among riders across the country. The launch event took place at the Stabex headquarters in Nansana and marks a significant step in deepening digital payment usage within Uganda’s transport sector.

The initiative is designed to onboard boda boda riders as MoMoPay merchants and encourage consistent use of merchant codes in everyday ride transactions. With over one million boda boda riders nationwide, including a strong concentration in urban and peri urban areas, the campaign focuses on making digital payments a natural and trusted part of daily commuting.

A boda boda rider showcases his MoMoPay merchant code alongside MTN MoMo’s Jemima Kariuki, as they expands access to simple and reliable payment solutions.

Through this partnership, registered boda boda riders who actively accept MoMoPay and meet daily transaction thresholds will qualify for a fuel reward, redeemable at selected Stabex stations. This incentive directly supports riders’ operational needs while reinforcing the habit of accepting cashless payments.

The campaign builds on MTN MoMo’s broader “Power of MoMo” initiative, launched in March 2026, which seeks to make digital payments a simple and everyday choice for all Ugandans. A key driver of this shift is the removal of transaction fees on payments below UGX 5,000, a move that directly targets common daily expenses such as boda fares and positions MoMo as the preferred option for small value transactions.

Speaking at the launch, Jemima Kairuki, Chief Product Officer at MTN Mobile Money Uganda Limited, emphasized the role of boda boda riders in shaping payment behaviors across communities.

“We are placing boda boda riders at the center of Uganda’s digital payments journey. These riders interact with customers every day and influence how money moves in real time. With MoMoPay, they have a simple and reliable way to receive payments, and through this partnership with Stabex, they also gain direct value in the form of fuel support. Registration is straightforward, there are no charges to receive payments, and funds remain easily accessible. This initiative empowers riders to earn more efficiently while helping normalize cashless transactions for everyday services.”

Teams from MTN MoMo and Stabex celebrate the launch of the Win Kafuta campaign in Nansana, advancing everyday digital payments within the boda boda sector

She added that the simplicity of onboarding, combined with immediate practical benefits, positions riders as ambassadors of a growing digital ecosystem that prioritizes ease, safety, and convenience.

To join the service, riders only need to dial the *165*17# short code, follow a guided registration process, and instantly receive a merchant code linked to their MoMo account. Once registered, they can begin accepting payments at zero cost, transfer funds freely to their mobile wallets, or withdraw through agent networks across the country.

To qualify for the daily fuel reward, a boda boda rider must receive at least four payments in a single day through their MoMoPay merchant code. Each payment must be UGX 20,000 or more and must come from different customers.

Riders who meet these conditions receive a UGX 500 fuel reward, which is redeemed the following day at participating Stabex stations when fueling with MTN MoMo. The reward is issued daily and cannot be accumulated across days. Registration remains free for all MTN subscribers, and boda boda merchants continue to receive payments at no charge.

Customers paying for rides benefit from a seamless experience, with minimal transaction fees and free payments for amounts below UGX 5,000. This aligns with the campaign’s goal of embedding digital payments into everyday life and building trust in merchant based transactions, even for the smallest amounts.

Boniface Kipchirchir, Head of Operations at Stabex International Uganda, welcomed the partnership and highlighted its practical impact on riders.

“This partnership with MTN MoMo makes it easier for boda boda riders to fuel and pay in a simple, cashless way. Riders can register directly, receive payments at no cost, and avoid the usual charges when transacting. At a time when fuel prices can fluctuate, initiatives like this help ease the daily burden and support riders to keep moving.”

Mbidde Ashraf Jaja, a leader within the Jjajja Boda community, welcomed the initiative and appreciated MTN MoMo for continuously introducing services that support boda boda riders in their daily work. He also encouraged riders who have joined the service to take full advantage of it, describing them as early adopters who are setting the pace for wider digital transformation within the sector.

The MoMo and Stabex boda boda fuel incentive campaign reflects a shared commitment to innovation, financial inclusion, and practical solutions that respond to the realities of Uganda’s working population. By rewarding active usage and simplifying access, the initiative sets the stage for sustained growth in digital payments adoption across the country.
