Mwenge South Isaza secured a place in the semi-finals of the fifth edition of the Tooro Kingdom MTN Masaza Tournament, while Burahya County kept its hopes alive after a 2-0 victory over Kibale Isaza.

Mwenge South finished top of Group A after beating Kyaka 1-0 at Madix Playground in Kyenjojo District on Aug. 7, setting up a semi-final against Kitagwenda County, which had already qualified from Group B.

Burahya’s victory over Kibale at Rwamwanja Stadium on Aug. 9 eliminated Kibale from the tournament and left Burahya waiting for the outcome of Group C’s final match.

Burahya will qualify for the semi-finals as the best loser if Fort Portal beats or draws with Ntoroko at Kanara Playground on Aug. 14.

The final group-stage fixtures are expected to determine the remaining semi-final places as the tournament moves into its knockout phase.

At both matches, MTN Uganda rewarded standout players with instant Mobile Money prizes.

Mwenge South’s Solomon Wafula Mukasa was named Man of the Match after the team’s victory over Kyaka, while Kyaka’s Danis Kakooza received the Second Best Player award.

In the Burahya-Kibale match, Burahya’s Isaac Mawanda was named Man of the Match and received a Mobile Money reward from MTN Uganda.

MTN Uganda brand ambassador Prime Longino said the tournament was providing a platform for young players to develop their football careers while giving communities an opportunity to engage around broader social issues.

“The growing participation and talent we are seeing through the Masaza Tournament is encouraging,” Longino said. “We want to continue providing platforms where young people can develop their talent, while using the reach of football to promote messages that matter to communities.”

He also urged fans and young people in Rwamwanja and across the Kingdom of Tooro to use sport as a platform to develop their talents and encouraged communities to continue spreading HIV prevention messages.

The tournament also provides MTN Uganda with an opportunity to promote its Mobile Money services, with the company using instant MoMo rewards to recognise players for their performances.

Burahya coach Kaija Solomon attributed his team’s victory over Kibale to disciplined training and lessons learned from an earlier defeat to Kitagwenda Isaza.

Mawanda said the Mobile Money reward had provided additional motivation for the team to maintain discipline and focus as it pursues qualification for the semi-finals.

Mwenge South Isaza coordinator Mutegeki Dirk Kuyt Vincent dedicated the team’s victory over Kyaka to its supporters, crediting their presence, encouragement and financial contributions for helping drive the team forward.

He also thanked the tournament’s sponsors, including MTN Uganda, and called on supporters to maintain their backing as the team prepares to face Kitagwenda in the semi-finals.

The Tooro Kingdom MTN Masaza Tournament is part of MTN Uganda’s wider support for grassroots football and talent development, providing young players with a competitive platform while bringing communities together through sport.

As the remaining group fixtures are played, attention now turns to the final semi-final line-up and the tournament’s decisive knockout stage.
