The former Executice Director, Uganda Media Centre, Ofwono Opondo has officillay been declared unopposed for as the Member of Parliament representing Older Persons in Uganda’s Eastern Region.
Opondo who was the Nation Resistance Movement (NRM) flagbearers, sailed through unoppose without any contender.
His election adds to the growing list of NRM candidates who have secured parliamentary seats unopposed in the ongoing electoral process including Thomas Tayebwan (Deputy Speaker), and Anitah Among among others, who are also waiting for swearing in next year.
The announcement was made on Friday by Richard Nsuube, the Returning Officer for the Eastern Region Older Persons parliamentary seat, in accordance with Section 37 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, Cap. 177.
“I, Nsuube Richard, being the Returning Officer for the Eastern Region Representative of Older Persons in Parliament, pursuant to Section 37 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, Cap. 177, hereby declare Ofwono Opondo P’odel of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) duly elected and unopposed,” Nsuube said during the official declaration.
Opondo, who is also the long-serving government spokesperson and Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, expressed deep appreciation to his constituents for the confidence they placed in him.
“I am deeply grateful to the older persons of the Eastern Region for placing their trust in me and for ensuring that this seat was uncontested. I pledge to serve not only the older persons of the Eastern Region and Uganda but also the entire public,” he said shortly after being declared.
He promised to be a voice for his constituents and the country at large, noting that his work in Parliament would be guided by respect for the rule of law and the Constitution.
“As a Member of Parliament, I will speak for both my constituency and the nation. I further pledge to uphold and abide by the laws and Constitution of Uganda,” Opondo said.
