Uganda’s crude oil has been named “Pearl Sweet Petroleum” by President Yoweri Museveni ahead of the country’s planned entry into the international oil market.
President Museveni said the name reflects the quality of Uganda’s crude oil, which has a low sulphur content. Crude oil with low sulphur is generally considered more valuable because it is easier and less costly to refine.
The President explained that Uganda’s oil is described as “sweet” because it contains little sulphur, unlike high-sulphur crude, which requires more processing and can attract higher refining costs.
Uganda is currently advancing the development of its oil resources in the Albertine Graben as it prepares to begin commercial production and exports.
The commercial oil project is being developed by the Government in partnership with international oil companies, with the crude expected to be transported through the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) for export to international markets.
