Police have arrested seven people and recovered suspected stolen property during an operation targeting alleged robbery, burglary and theft in parts of Kampala.
The operation was conducted on Wednesday, 23 September, in Kinawataka, Kalerwe and Central zones in Mbuya One Parish, Nakawa Division, according to Kampala Metropolitan Police.
Police said the operation followed information about a group allegedly involved in robberies, housebreaking, burglary and phone snatching in Kinawataka and surrounding areas.
Among those arrested are 28-year-old Edward Kyabagu, also known as Zagga, and 26-year-old George Kutosi, alias Kiwuka or Virus. Police said the two are being investigated in connection with a robbery case registered at Kinawataka Police Station.
Investigators said preliminary inquiries indicate that the pair may be linked to a wider criminal group operating in the area.
Police have not disclosed further details about the robbery case.
The other suspects were identified by police as Ronald Kajura, Godwin Muzaale, Arafat Bengo, Samuel Boyi and James Victor Odomel also known as Oundo.
Some of them are being investigated in connection with recent cases involving burglary, housebreaking and the theft of electronic equipment.
Police said the operation led to the recovery of a 55-inch Hisense smart television, speakers, more than 14 mobile phones, a laptop, laptop bags, a panga, suspected housebreaking implements and student identification cards, among other items.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, said the suspects remain detained at Kinawataka Police Station as investigations continue.
“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other suspects who are still at large and dismantle the wider criminal group operating in the area,” he said.
He said police were also working to identify the owners of the recovered property and trace other items believed to have been stolen.
Owoyesigyire commended residents for providing information that supported the operation and urged members of the public to continue reporting suspected criminal activity to police.
