A Ugandan police officer has died after allegedly shooting and injuring a woman and a private security guard at Freedom City shopping centre along Entebbe Road, police said.
Police identified the officer as Police Constable Saul Ayijuka.
He allegedly shot himself after the incident and died at the scene. The woman, identified as 23-year-old Florence Akankunda, was shot in the thigh and taken to hospital, while the security guard is also receiving treatment.
“The incident is believed to have arisen from a previous relationship between the deceased officer and the female victim,” said Luke Owoyesigyire, deputy public relations officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police.
Katwe Police said officers responded to the scene, secured the area and recovered an AK-47 rifle, ammunition and spent cartridges.
The items have been taken as exhibits as investigators establish what led to the shooting.
The officer’s body was taken to Mulago Hospital for a postmortem examination.
Police said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are continuing.
