Reach A Hand Africa (RAHA), formerly Reach A Hand Uganda, has strengthened maternal and reproductive healthcare services in Kasese and Bunyangabu districts by donating medical equipment worth Shs137 million to 15 health facilities under its U Decide Kasese-Bunyangabu (KB) Project.
The equipment was officially handed over on June 25 during a ceremony at the Kasese District Headquarters attended by district leaders, health officials, health facility representatives, and officials from Reach A Hand Africa led by Chief Executive Officer, Humphrey Nabimanya.
Among those present were Kasese District Health Officer Dr. Bwambale Amon, Principal Chief Administrative Officer Mustafa Kikusa, Deputy LCV Chairperson Jeremiah Bwanandeke, representatives of beneficiary health facilities, and officials from the Tooro Kingdom.
Speaking at the handover, Nabimanya said the donation is intended to improve the quality of reproductive health services and contribute to reducing maternal mortality and morbidity in the region.
“The donation is aimed at further improving service delivery, particularly reducing maternal mortality and morbidity rates, following the commendable performance of health facilities in providing family planning services,” Nabimanya said.
The donated equipment includes examination couches, blood pressure machines, contraceptive storage cabinets, suction machines, Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) kits, motorcycles, and other essential medical supplies. Reach A Hand Africa also renovated family planning rooms at the beneficiary health facilities to create a more conducive environment for service delivery.
The intervention comes at a critical time following reports indicating that Kasese District continues to face maternal and newborn health challenges. According to media reports, including those published by the Daily Monitor, the district recorded 26 maternal deaths and 189 prenatal deaths between July and December 2025, largely attributed to blood shortages, delayed access to medication, and the area’s difficult terrain.
District leaders welcomed the support, describing it as a timely intervention that will strengthen healthcare delivery in underserved communities.
The District Health Officer and the Principal Chief Administrative Officer commended Reach A Hand Africa for its continued investment in the district’s health sector while appealing for additional support to reach more vulnerable facilities.
“We request more assistance for health facilities that continue to face significant challenges, including Ihandiro Health Centre III and Kitholhu Health Centre III,” the district officials said.
Health facility in-charges expressed optimism that the new equipment will improve access to quality family planning services and overall maternal healthcare. They also pledged to ensure proper maintenance and responsible use of the equipment as part of the district’s health inventory.
Representing the Tooro Kingdom, Hon. Nicholas Mugume praised Reach A Hand Africa for its commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of young people.
He also highlighted ongoing youth empowerment initiatives being implemented by the kingdom, including the construction of a multi-purpose facility that will house an ICT centre, library, and poultry unit to expand young people’s access to digital skills, education, and income-generating opportunities.
The U Decide Kasese-Bunyangabu Project is one of Reach A Hand Africa’s initiatives aimed at improving access to quality sexual and reproductive health services while empowering young people and strengthening health systems in Uganda’s underserved communities.
