Police in Rukiga District are investigating the suspected murder of a 45-year-old Rwandan national who was allegedly strangled in a domestic-related incident.
The victim, identified as James Vian Malirwa, a resident of Nyamatete Village in Rwimbogo Sub-county, Gatsibo District in Rwanda, was found dead on August 3, 2026, prompting police to launch investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime said officers acted swiftly and arrested two suspects in connection with the incident.
“Police condemns acts of violence in the strongest terms possible. Domestic disputes should be reported to police, LC leadership or the probation office instead of resorting to violence,” he said.
The suspects have been identified as Nyirampakaniye Sitafania, 48, the deceased’s wife and a Rwandan national from Rwimbogo Sub-county, and Sarah Asifiwe, a casual worker and resident of Kagarama Village, Nyabitekyere Sub-county, Nyagatare District in Rwanda.
Police say preliminary findings indicate that the killing may have followed a prolonged domestic disagreement between the deceased and his wife. Police says investigations into the case are ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances behind the incident.
Authorities have urged members of the public experiencing domestic conflicts to seek support from relevant authorities rather than turning to violence.
