KYADONDO, Kampala: The new converts were officially presented today at the NRM headquarters in Kyadondo by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa.
He introduced 15 former opposition candidates, most of them previously affiliated with the National Unity Platform (NUP) and the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), saying their move signaled a broader shift in Uganda’s political landscape.
The defectors explained that their decision came after prolonged discussions and personal conviction, and they pledged to actively campaign for President Museveni and the NRM in their respective constituencies.
Those who joined from NUP include David Okullu (Oyam North), Eric Mukomba (Butebo), Joseph Kanto Ochen (Lamwo County), Hillary Tumuhimbise (Rujumbura), Charles Odongo (Kwania North), Dennis Onyum (Kyoga County), Walter Okot (Aswa County) and Godfrey Oryem (Omoro).
From FDC, the new NRM members are Emmanuel Olebo (Kibale County, Pallisa), Martin Owako (Pallisa County), Yokania Mukeke (Bunyole East), Moses Balikowa (Bunya South), Yasin Mabaale (Bunyole West) and Edwin Namanya (Bushenyi–Ishaka).
Speaking to journalists, Tayebwa dismissed allegations that the politicians had been induced or pressured to defect, maintaining that the transition followed months of engagement and dialogue.
“We have been in discussions with these leaders for quite some time, and we will continue reaching out to others,” Tayebwa said. “Claims that people are bought are misleading. This has been a gradual and deliberate process.”
He also rejected accusations from NUP officials suggesting he had a role in bribing opposition figures, stressing that the decisions were voluntary.
NRM Deputy Secretary General Rose Namayanja Nsereko praised the defectors, calling their move a patriotic gesture and an endorsement of the ruling party’s leadership.
“When you join us, we move forward together,” Namayanja said. “This is not only about NRM, but about building the country. Your choice strengthens our efforts to mobilise support for President Museveni.”
Meanwhile, NRM Director of Information and Publicity Emmanuel Dombo said the defections underscored the party’s inclusive nature and expanding national reach.
“Our party allows freedom to join or leave,” Dombo said. “Once you come on board, everyone has equal duties and rights.”
