MENGO, KAMPALA : Buganda Kingdom has welcomed global dancehall star Spice to its headquarters at Bulange, in a visit that underscores Uganda’s growing cultural and tourism appeal on the international stage.
Speaking during the engagement, the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, highlighted the significance of hosting internationally recognized figures.
“I had the pleasure of hosting the Jamaican Queen of Dancehall, Spice, at the Kingdom Headquarters, Bulange,” Mayiga said. “Her presence in Uganda is a powerful reminder of how global cultural icons can elevate our visibility on the world stage.”
Spice is in Uganda ahead of her highly anticipated performance scheduled for Saturday, 9th May, at the Lugogo Cricket Oval. The Katikkiro called on Ugandans to turn up in large numbers and experience her artistry firsthand.
“As she prepares to perform this Saturday, I encourage Ugandans to come out and experience her craft,” he added.
Beyond entertainment, Spice’s visit carries a broader cultural and economic significance. In partnership with the Uganda Tourism Board and the Buganda Heritage and Tourism Board, the artist is touring key heritage sites to showcase Uganda’s beauty and cultural richness.
One of the highlights of her visit was a tour of the Kasubi Royal Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important symbol of Buganda’s history and identity.
“Beyond the stage, her collaboration to tour and showcase Uganda’s beauty is commendable,” Mayiga noted. “Today’s visit to the Kasubi Royal Tombs is part of that meaningful effort.”
Mayiga emphasized that such visits extend far beyond entertainment value, positioning Uganda as a competitive global destination.
“When influential figures like Spice choose Uganda, they do more than perform—they tell our story to the world, attract global attention, and open doors for tourism, culture, and investment,” he said. “This is the power of cultural exchange, positioning Uganda as a destination of choice.”
Who is Spice?
Born Grace Hamilton, Spice is widely regarded as the “Queen of Dancehall” in Jamaica. She rose to international prominence with her breakout hit Romping Shop alongside Vybz Kartel and has since built a career defined by bold lyrics, energetic performances, and a strong female voice in a male-dominated genre.
Spice has released several successful projects, including her debut studio album 10, which earned a nomination at the Grammy Awards. Beyond music, she is also a television personality, notably appearing on Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta, and an entrepreneur. Her influence spans music, fashion, and pop culture, making her one of the most recognizable figures in global dancehall today.
