On the evening of May 20, 2025, tragedy struck at around 9:00 pm at the Wantoni Junction along Jinja Highway in Mukono District.
A fatal road crash claimed the lives of three people and left ten others injured in what Michael Kananura, the Community Liaison Officer for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, described as a catastrophic accident.
The collision involved a chaotic scene of multiple vehicles and motorcycles.
A Mitsubishi Fuso truck (UBB 422U), driven by a man whose actions would later be scrutinized, was the main culprit.
In total, four vehicles , a Toyota Hiace with the plate number UBP 359W, another Toyota Hiace (UAW 042E), a third Toyota Hiace (UAQ 398L), were involved.
Alongside these, five motorcycles, including a Bajaj (UFL 976T), a TVS (UFN 916P), and more Bajajs (UEU 698W, UDK 495B, and UDZ 777A), were caught in the deadly aftermath.
According to preliminary reports, the Mitsubishi Fuso truck driver apparently lost control as he approached the Wantoni Junction.
Kananura noted that in a split second, the truck allegedly veered into the opposite lane, sparking a chain of collisions.
The truck smashed into the vehicles and motorcycles nearby, with the impact further magnified by the roadside food stalls that were struck in the fray.
Three individuals lost their lives on the spot, their fate sealed by the force of the crash.
He said 10 others, including pedestrians, motorcycle riders, and those in the vehicles, suffered injuries ranging from severe to moderate.
Given their severe injuries, Kananura said they immediately rushed to various hospitals including Mukono General Hospital for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were transported to Kawolo Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
All involved vehicles and motorcycles were towed to the Mukono Police parking yard.
The vehicles, still marked by the scene of the crash, await thorough inspection as investigations into the cause of this tragic event begin.
Kananura confirmed that authorities are committed to uncovering the full details behind the accident, which has left the Mukono community in shock and mourning.
