Police have arrested TikTok content creator Jinjo Nassif for allegedly spreading false information regarding the death of Hon. Yusuf Nsibambi, the Member of Parliament for Mawokota South.
According to authorities, Nassif falsely announced the MP’s death on his social media account after allegedly receiving Shs 100,000 from political opponents of Hon. Nsibambi. The motive was reportedly to tarnish the MP’s image and mislead the public.
The matter was promptly reported to the police by Hon. Nsibambi. Following investigations, Nassif was arrested and detained at Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala. He has since confessed to the offense, admitting that he was paid to spread the misinformation.
Nassif is being charged under the Computer Misuse Act for disseminating false and malicious information.
The police have issued a strong warning to the public, especially social media users, to exercise responsibility when posting or sharing information online. Authorities emphasized the dangers of misinformation, particularly during politically sensitive times, and urged individuals not to accept payments or engage in smear campaigns intended to damage others’ reputations.
“We caution the public against abusing social media platforms. Spreading falsehoods, especially for monetary gain, is not only unethical but also criminal. Such acts will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted,” said Patrick Onyango, Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson.
