Two people have died and several others sustained serious injuries in a road crash along the Kabale-Kisoro road in Rubanda District.
The crash occurred on Monday at about 2:00pm at Murutenga Village in Hamurwa Sub-county, according to police.
Kigezi Regional Police said the crash involved a Toyota Noah, registration number UAX 824H, silver in colour.
Police said the vehicle was reportedly descending a steep slope when the driver lost control, allegedly due to speeding, causing the vehicle to overturn several times.
One person died at the scene and was identified as Rev. Sr. Tugumenawe Mary Gorret Kenda, 58, who was attached to Rushoroza Catholic Diocese in Kabale District.
Another unidentified male passenger died shortly after being taken to Rubanda Hospital.
Several other passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital for medical attention. They include Katushabe Jenerus, 47, a resident of Nyakabungo Village, Kishanje Parish, Bufundi Sub-county in Rubanda District; Hakiza Abed, 30, a Rwandan national; and Garuka Hamis, 54.
Kigezi Regional Police Public Relations Officer SP Nelson Tumushime said investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
Police have appealed to motorists to exercise maximum caution on the roads, avoid speeding and overloading, and ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before starting their journeys.
