Two construction workers have been seriously injured after a crane lift collapsed at a building site in Ggaba, in Uganda’s capital, Kampala.
The incident happened at about 11:30 local time on Tuesday at a construction site in Mission Zone, Ggaba Parish, Makindye Division, as workers were putting up a six-storey apartment block.
Police said the workers were mixing concrete and loading it onto the crane lift when the structure broke from the sixth floor and fell. Part of the building, including a balcony, was damaged in the collapse, while two workers on the fifth floor fell with the lift.
The injured men, identified as James Baluku and Silver Muhima, were taken to Wentz Hospital before being referred to Mengo Hospital for further treatment.
Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy public relations officer Luke Owoyesigyire said police had opened an investigation into the incident.
“Police visited and examined the scene, documented it and recovered the damaged crane lift for further examination,” Owoyesigyire said.
He added that debris had been collected for laboratory analysis and statements taken from workers and other witnesses at the site.
The National Building Review Board has also been notified.
The case was registered at Kabalagala Police Division as an alleged rash and negligent act causing injuries. No arrests have been made.
Police said they were also monitoring the condition of the injured workers and facilitating their medical examinations as investigations continue.
Authorities are investigating how the crane lift failed and whether any safety or construction regulations were breached.
