Kampala, October 13, 2025 – Uganda reaffirmed its pivotal role in steering the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) towards renewed solidarity and impactful global engagement during the Senior Officials’ Meeting of the XIX Midterm Ministerial Meeting held today at Speke Resort, Munyonyo.

Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, welcomed delegates from member states, underscoring the nation’s steadfast commitment to advancing the outcomes of last year’s historic 19th NAM Summit hosted in Kampala.

Reflecting on nearly two years of progress, Abubakhar emphasized Uganda’s role as Chair of the NAM Coordinating Bureau and called for collective action to strengthen the Movement’s influence on critical international issues.

“The challenges we face, from peace and security to sustainable development and human rights, demand a unified and resolute approach,” he stated, urging all members to actively contribute to negotiations and to harness the power of solidarity amid today’s complex global landscape.

A central theme of the address was NAM’s enduring dedication to the Palestinian cause.

Odongo highlighted the Movement’s consistent stance against colonialism and occupation, stressing the urgent need for humanitarian aid and diplomatic efforts to realize a Two-State Solution. “Sustained focus is crucial, not only on ceasefires but on rebuilding Palestinian institutions and infrastructure for lasting independence,” he said.

The Minister also spotlighted the critical role of South-South cooperation in overcoming barriers faced by developing countries.

He pointed to shifting global trade dynamics, noting a dramatic rise in South-South trade, from $0.6 trillion in 1995 to $5.6 trillion in 2023, as a hopeful sign for enhanced regional integration and economic empowerment.

However, Odongo cautioned that much remains to be done. “The full potential of interregional trade among Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean remains untapped. Unlocking these opportunities is key to industrialization, innovation, and sustainable growth,” he remarked.

He called on all delegations to engage with a spirit of constructive dialogue and urgency, underscoring that only through unity and coordinated action can the Movement truly advance the aspirations of its member states.
