WAKISO, Uganda — Uganda National Media Group (UNMG) has officially relaunched its operations following the restructuring of the former Horizon Media Uganda, marking a fresh attempt to establish a strong presence in the country’s rapidly evolving media industry.
The company, which unveiled its new identity during a launch ceremony in Naggalabi, Wakiso District, traces its roots to Horizon Media Uganda, founded in 2008. The previous company later ceased operations due to financial challenges, prompting a comprehensive restructuring that has resulted in the formation of UNMG.
The relaunch comes at a time when Uganda’s media landscape is undergoing significant transformation. While demand for credible news remains high, media houses are grappling with shrinking advertising revenues, changing audience habits, and increasing competition across digital platforms.
Unlike traditional publishers that primarily depended on print newspapers, UNMG plans to begin operations with an electronic newspaper, National Horizon, before eventually expanding into print.
The move reflects the growing shift towards digital news consumption as internet access and smartphone usage continue to rise, enabling more Ugandans to access news online.
Industry observers note that technology alone is not enough to guarantee success. Sustainable media organisations require strong editorial standards, sound financial management, audience trust, and diversified revenue streams. Many media companies have struggled in recent years due to rising operational costs and increased competition for advertising revenue.
Speaking at the launch, UNMG Chief Executive Officer Ssentamu Derrick said the company is committed to delivering balanced, credible and professional journalism while complying with all regulatory requirements.
“We are bringing a new service to our clients and readers, and we also promise to comply with regulators’ guidelines,” Derrick said.
Company founder Ssekaayi Simon said the restructuring was informed by lessons learned from the earlier Horizon Media Uganda venture and was aimed at creating a stronger corporate foundation capable of supporting long-term growth.
UNMG’s board includes Wasemi Sylvia as Board Director and Isaac Ssegawa as Non-Executive Director.
As the company embarks on this new chapter, its success will largely depend on its ability to earn public trust, maintain high editorial standards, and build a sustainable business model in an increasingly competitive digital media environment.
UNMG’s return also underscores the continued confidence of entrepreneurs in Uganda’s media sector, despite the challenges facing journalism, as digital platforms continue to reshape how news is produced, distributed and consumed.
