Luwero, Uganda – Children with disabilities from 10 special schools in Luwero came together for a sports gala organized by the Uganda Society for Disabled Children (USDC), with support from Disability Sports Organisation, Denmark.
The event took place at Nsawo Church of Uganda Primary School. Its goal was to promote inclusive education and show that having a disability does not mean someone cannot succeed.
Celebrating Success
The sports gala is part of USDC’s program that helps children with disabilities learn better through special teaching methods, useful technology, and training in skills for work. Many people, including local leaders, parents, and supporters, came to watch the children show their skills and teamwork.
Ms. Dolorence Were, the Executive Director of USDC, said inclusive education and sports help children with disabilities become strong and confident. She said, “We started training 20 coaches in Luwero and Jinja five years ago, and now we see our students doing well in sports and school. We ask parents to keep supporting their children.”
Giving Students Strength
One student, Nazibanja Irene Hope, thanked USDC for their help. She said, “USDC has helped me through education, advice, and support. This sports gala brings us together and shows that having a disability is not a weakness.”
District education officer Nabwire Christine also spoke at the event. She praised USDC for helping teachers and students and asked parents to keep sending their children with disabilities to school.
Looking Ahead
USDC plans to take children with disabilities to join the Paralympics in Masaka in October 2025, if they get enough funds. The group wants to keep giving these children chances to learn and play sports so they can be part of society.
The sports gala was a big success. It showed the talents of children with disabilities and the importance of including them in education and sports to help them grow and belong.
