KAMPALA, Uganda –Unilever Uganda, through its oral care brand Pepsodent, has launched a school outreach campaign targeting 100,000 pupils across 40 primary schools in Kampala and Wakiso districts to promote proper oral hygiene among children.
The campaign is part of activities to mark World Oral Health Day and is being implemented under the theme “Do the 2 – Brush Day and Night,” encouraging children to brush their teeth at least twice daily to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
Through interactive school-based sessions, pupils are being taught the importance of oral hygiene, proper tooth-brushing techniques, and the role daily habits play in maintaining a healthy mouth. The programme also includes the distribution of oral care products to help learners practice these habits both at school and at home.
Speaking during an outreach activity at Nakasero Primary School, Luck Ochieng, Managing Director of Unilever East Africa, emphasized the importance of instilling healthy habits early in life.
“Building the habit of brushing twice a day from a young age is one of the most effective ways to prevent oral health problems. Through the ‘Do the 2’ campaign, we are empowering children with simple and practical habits that support healthier smiles and overall wellbeing,” Ochieng said.
He noted that schools provide a strategic platform to influence behaviour early, allowing organisations to reach many children at once and help shape lifelong health practices.
According to global data from the World Health Organization, oral diseases affect nearly 3.5 billion people worldwide, making them among the most common health conditions globally.
Ochieng added that many dental problems, including tooth cavities, develop gradually due to poor oral hygiene and dietary habits, but can be prevented if healthy practices are adopted early.
He also urged parents to reinforce the habit of brushing twice daily at home.
“Parents should encourage children to brush in the morning and at night using fluoride-based toothpaste. Making brushing fun and part of a daily routine helps children maintain the habit for life,” he said.
Meanwhile, Angella Kisoro, Deputy Head Teacher at Nakasero Primary School, welcomed the initiative, noting that poor oral hygiene among pupils can lead to toothaches and other dental problems that sometimes affect school attendance and academic performance.
“Teaching children how to properly care for their teeth will help them stay healthy, confident, and focused in class,” she said.
