KATAKWI District: The very busy and workaholic vice president Maj. Retired Jessica Rose Alupo Epel has been duly declared the winner of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries for the Katakwi district Woman Member of Parliament Flag bearer seat.

According to the results released last night by the NRM district electoral commission, Alupo secured a decisive victory with 84,944 votes ( 88.8%), comfortably ahead of her distant rival Anuken Angella who garnered 5,704. Akurut Violet Adome, a third contestant, trailed with just 4,828 votes and Anyakoit Cicilia with 139.

The announcement was made by James Otilem, the NRM district Registrar who lauded the people of Katakwi in Eastern Uganda for turning up in big numbers to participate in the first ever peaceful elections in the district.

The vice president’s victory paves the way for her to represent the NRM party in the forthcoming 2026 general elections as she will be facing off with opposition party flag bearers if she doesn’t go unopposed

Speaking at the district tally centre, shortly after being declared, VP Alupo expressed gratitude to the people of Katakwi for the overwhelming support and urged them to continue maintaining peace and unity, throughout this electoral period.

She lauded the NRM Electoral Commission for staging a free and free election. “I want to thank the people of Katakwi for expressing confidence in me by giving me all the 84,944 votes representing an 88.8% victory,” VP Alupo said.

She further applauded her supporters for being dedicated members of the NRM party by turning up in large numbers to elect their leaders.

“I thank you for demonstrating responsibility by physically coming to choose your leaders,” a joyous Alupo said.

The vice president congratulated the police and its sister agencies, including the UPDF and Uganda Prisons Service, for maintaining peace and tranquillity in the Teso Sub- region.

Alupo also called on Ugandans to take full advantage of the prevailing peace, infrastructure, and government development programmes to transform their livelihoods and foster socio-economic growth.

She cited ongoing government efforts to enhance infrastructure in the Teso Sub-region, including the construction and upgrade of strategic roads such as the Kumi–Ngora–Serere–Pagwara road and the Serere–Soroti City Road. These, she said, complement the existing Soroti–Moroto tarmac highway, which links Teso to the Karamoja Sub-region.

H.E. Alupo emphasised the government’s continued support through flagship programmes implemented by various MDAs, including road development, rural electrification, the Women’s Fund, disability grants, and the Emyooga initiative.
