Chaos erupted at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala when four members of the Democratic Party’s youth wing were arrested for attempting to storm the premises in protest against the party’s current leadership.
The group, identified as Wadimba Anthony (35) from Kayunga, Dumba Julius (32) and Kirya Ismail (33), both from Kawala, and Mpunge Micheal (29) from Entebbe, allegedly tried to force their way into the offices demanding an audience with Electoral Commission Chairman, Justice Simon Byabakama.
According to Kampala Metropolitan spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, the quartet sought to challenge the legitimacy of DP President Norbert Mao, citing alleged irregularities in the party’s recent delegates’ conference held in Mbarara.
Mao is also the Justice and Constitutional Affairs in the Central Government.
Onyango said the group refused to leave after being told to make a formal appointment, instead escalating the situation and becoming unruly.
The men were arrested and charged with common nuisance and are currently being detained at Kabalagala Police Station.
Onyango in his statement urged political groups to follow lawful procedures when addressing disputes.
He said investigation are still ongoing.
