Peter Zake Senyimba Sebayigga, Chairperson of Rotary Family Health Days in Rotary Districts 9213 and 9214, has expressed his commitment to working with KCCA and community leaders in Kawempe Division to improve the health of residents in the ghetto communities.
He made these remarks over the weekend during the climax of a one-day community health initiative, which included a cleanup of drainage channels followed by a medical camp for the ghetto residents of Katanga in Wandegeya Parish, Kawempe Division.
He stated that Rotary will continue its mission of organizing medical camps within their district jurisdiction due to the challenging health conditions faced by many residents. Katanga was specifically chosen for this camp because of its unique environmental and hygiene-related challenges.
The event, held under the theme “Unite for Good Health and Sanitation”, was organized by the Rotary Club of Kampala Wandegeya in conjunction with Kampala Kawempe and the Rotary Club of Makerere, in association with Rotaract Kampala Wandegeya, all under Rotary Districts 9213 and 9214, in partnership with KCCA Kawempe Division.
A team of dozens of diverse medical professionals attended to an estimated 1,000 patients from Greater Katanga. Services provided included free eye care and glasses, HIV testing, cervical cancer screening, family planning information, malaria prevention, blood pressure checks, and other medical services.
Richard Mutwafu, President of the Rotary Club of Kampala Wandegeya, said a needs assessment was conducted in the Kimwanyi area of Greater Katanga, and the findings on health and sanitation were alarming. This prompted them to mobilize resources and medical personnel to intervene.
He noted that due to the area’s congestion and swampy terrain, the team combined health and hygiene efforts—beginning with a cleanup of the ghettos, the opening of drainage channels, and offering residents health education while encouraging them to seek medical attention at health facilities.
