A team of medical personnel from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) is providing care to hundreds of patients at Chahafi HC IV in Gisha Village, Kisoro Municipality, as part of the 45th Tarehe Sita celebrations in the Kigezi Sub-region.

The static medical and surgical camp, running from December 2–7, 2025, offers a wide range of services, including free treatment for malaria, hernia, and minor surgical procedures. Patients are also receiving free dental and eye check-ups, male circumcision, HIV/AIDS screening and counseling, antenatal services, and general medical care.

Col. Dr. Nobert Kabugo, team 1 medical leader, described the turnout as overwhelming, with hundreds seeking treatment. “It is a blessing to see so many people receiving medical attention,” he said. He commended local leaders for mobilizing residents and praised the ongoing partnership between the UPDF and civilian communities.

Dr. Kabugo also urged residents to maintain clean surroundings and avoid cooking in sleeping areas to prevent malaria and respiratory infections.

Dr. Nkurunziza John Bosco, in charge of Chahafi HC IV, lauded the UPDF medics for their professionalism and support, noting that their efforts extend beyond security to meaningful contributions in healthcare. “The UPDF medics are doing a great job, and we appreciate their efforts,” he said.

The medical team is performing surgeries, administering vaccinations, and providing treatment for illnesses such as diarrhea, malaria, vomiting, tuberculosis, and hypertension. A UPDF medical expert said, “We are here to serve the community and make a difference in their lives. It is a privilege to contribute to the health and wellbeing of our people.”

This outreach is part of the UPDF’s broader efforts to support rural communities where access to healthcare is limited. Local leaders have welcomed the initiative. “We are grateful to the UPDF for this medical camp. The services provided are essential, and we appreciate their commitment,” said Dr. Nkurunziza.

Judith Ndyaziye, a mother who brought her one-month-old son for immunization, commended the UPDF for their medical support in addition to providing security. She encouraged other residents to take advantage of the free services offered during the Tarehe Sita celebrations.

The Chahafi HC IV camp is one of several across the Kigezi Sub-region. Other pro-community UPDF initiatives during the celebrations include construction projects, tree planting, vector control, and community clean-up activities.
