MENGO, Uganda : Buganda Kingdom has stepped into Uganda’s fast-growing digital commerce space with the launch of Kibuga Online, an e-commerce platform positioned to unlock market access for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) nationwide.
The platform, developed through K2 Telecom, was officially unveiled at Bulange, Mengo, the kingdom’s administrative headquarters, signaling a strategic shift toward technology-driven economic participation.
Speaking at the launch, Buganda’s Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga framed the move within a broader economic context, describing technology as the most valuable resource of the modern era.
“Technology is the gold and oil of the current times,” Mayiga said, noting that even countries endowed with natural resources increasingly rely on information and communication technology (ICT) to extract value and compete globally.
Targeting Uganda’s SME Backbone
The business case for Kibuga Online is clear. SMEs account for more than 90 percent of Uganda’s private sector and contribute roughly 75 percent of the country’s gross domestic product. Despite their economic weight, many of these enterprises face structural barriers — notably limited geographic reach and restricted access to formal markets.
Kibuga Online seeks to address this imbalance by providing a centralized digital marketplace where businesses can list products, manage inventory, process orders and receive payments through an integrated web and mobile application.
The platform supports diverse product categories including electronics, fashion, beauty products, groceries, household goods and locally manufactured merchandise. Integrated logistics coordination and customer support services are designed to streamline the transaction process from purchase to delivery.
Riding Uganda’s Digital Wave
Uganda’s steady growth in mobile penetration and digital payments adoption over the past decade has created fertile ground for online commerce. Industry observers note that increasing smartphone usage and improved internet access are reshaping consumer behavior, particularly among the country’s predominantly youthful population — over 70 percent of Ugandans are under 30.
Mayiga emphasized that digital transformation is no longer optional.
“The kingdom cannot afford to be left behind in the global shift toward e-commerce,” he said, pointing to the convenience and efficiency of online shopping in an increasingly connected economy.
Henry Ndugga, Head of Products at K2 Telecom, said Kibuga Online is designed to balance consumer convenience with expanded market access for traders and manufacturers. While Uganda already hosts several e-commerce operators, he argued that rising demand and underserved segments leave room for additional platforms with localized strategies.
“There is growing appetite for online shopping, and that creates opportunity for innovation and competition,” Ndugga noted.
Economic Empowerment and Youth Inclusion
Beyond commercial transactions, the initiative is being positioned as a broader economic empowerment tool. Kingdom officials say the platform aims to narrow the gap between producers and consumers while stimulating job creation in areas such as logistics, digital services and customer support.
Newton Kalera, Board Chairperson of Kibuga Investments Limited, described Kibuga Online as a milestone in integrating Buganda’s institutional heritage with contemporary digital enterprise.
The launch reflects a wider trend among traditional institutions and local entities seeking relevance in a rapidly digitizing economy. By leveraging technology infrastructure through K2 Telecom, Buganda Kingdom is signaling its intention to participate directly in Uganda’s evolving digital marketplace rather than remain a peripheral actor.
As competition intensifies in the e-commerce sector, the platform’s long-term success will likely depend on vendor onboarding, reliable logistics, user trust and sustained digital adoption. For now, Kibuga Online enters the market at a time when Uganda’s structural demographics and connectivity trends appear aligned with its ambitions.
