EDUCATION, MAKERERE: In a rare show of academic muscle within the security sector, 25 senior officers from the Uganda Police Force and the Uganda Prisons Service have graduated with a Master of Arts in Peace and Conflict Studies.

The officers completed the advanced degree through a partnership between the Police Senior Command and Staff College Bwebajja and Makerere University, one of Uganda’s oldest and most prestigious institutions.

Among the graduates are two Commissioners: Police Ezra Mujabwami of the Uganda Police Force and Brenda Sana of Uganda Prisons Service.Three Assistant Commissioners of Police also earned the qualification. They are Claire Nabakka, Joseph Alfred Ojinga, and Muzafari Bruhane Zirabamuzale.

The remaining graduates include 20 Senior Superintendents of Police, marking one of the largest cohorts of high-ranking security officers to attain postgraduate qualifications in peace and conflict studies at the same time.

The milestone underscores a growing emphasis on professionalization and academic advancement within Uganda’s security agencies, particularly in areas of conflict resolution, strategic leadership, and peacebuilding.

Officials say the program is designed to equip senior commanders with analytical and practical skills to manage complex security challenges in an evolving national and regional landscape.

With commissioners and senior commanders now adding master’s degrees to their credentials, Uganda’s security leadership is signaling a shift toward blending operational command with academic expertise in peace and conflict management.
