KAMPALA, Uganda : The Nakawa Division NRM Women’s League Chairperson, Irene Kusiima, has mobilized more than 300 women from Fort Portal City in Kabarole District and Nakawa Division to join the NSSF Smart Life Flexi Program, an initiative aimed at promoting a strong savings culture among low-income earners.
Kusiima made the remarks on Thursday at the Lugogo UMA Multipurpose Hall during a joint sensitization workshop organized by NSSF Uganda and Union Uganda for transport industry players. The workshop focused on educating participants about the benefits of the Smart Life Flexi Program.
The event attracted over 600 participants, including boda boda riders, taxi, bus and truck drivers, as well as women engaged in small-scale businesses.
Kusiima emphasized the role of leaders in encouraging communities to embrace savings schemes. She noted that mobilizing people to join the NSSF Smart Life Flexi Program would strengthen individual financial discipline and support long-term economic stability.
She also highlighted the complementary role of Union Uganda, which provides a range of affordable, high-quality products such as Spiro electric motorcycles, low-cost housing units, lubricants, and mineral water.
Kusiima further revealed that after attending a Union Uganda strategic business planning retreat in Dubai during the Christmas festive season, she intensified her mobilization efforts, recruiting hundreds of women into both the NSSF and Union Uganda programs. She said the initiatives align with broader government efforts to combat household poverty.
Nalubega Mastulah, Chairperson of the Mbuya II Twekulakulanye Group, commended Kusiima for her leadership and mobilization efforts. She noted that the program has equipped members with valuable knowledge and skills in smart saving, which they intend to adopt for improved financial stability and future prosperity.
The Managing Director of NSSF Uganda, Patrick Ayota, welcomed the new members and assured them of reliable returns on their savings. He described their decision to join the fund as both timely and commendable.
Ayota also applauded Union Uganda National Chairman Fred Senoga and his executive committee for their efforts in organizing and mobilizing transport sector players. He noted that such initiatives are key to promoting professionalism through the adoption of modern, market-driven technologies that enhance income generation and savings capacity.
He explained that the NSSF Smart Life Flexi Program is specifically designed to build the financial capacity of workers in the informal sector, enabling them to develop a consistent savings culture and improve their livelihoods.
Senoga, on his part, revealed that Union Uganda recently introduced a fleet of 50,000 Spiro electric motorcycles onto the market. He said this initiative aims to gradually replace fuel-powered bikes as part of efforts to reduce air pollution in urban areas.
