Welding sparks suspected in Kampala bar fire that destroyed property worth millions

Police are investigating a fire that destroyed property worth millions of shillings at a bar in Kiwatule, Kampala, with preliminary findings pointing to sparks from welding work carried out during renovations.
The fire broke out at about 2pm on Tuesday, 11 August, at Lagatos Bar in Kazinga Zone, Kiwatule Parish, Nakawa Division.
“We are investigating the incident, and preliminary findings indicate that the fire may have been caused by sparks generated during welding activities that were being carried out inside the premises as part of renovation works,” said Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer ASP Luke Owoyesigyire.
No deaths or injuries were reported in the incident.
Police said their Fire Prevention and Rescue Services responded promptly and extinguished the blaze. The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) disconnected power to the premises as a precaution to prevent further danger.
Police officers inspected the scene, while investigations continue to establish the exact cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage.
Authorities urged the public to take extra precautions when carrying out welding and other activities involving open flames or sparks, particularly in buildings containing combustible materials.
Police also called for appropriate fire-safety measures to be put in place during renovation and construction works to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
