A quiet stretch of Mutundwe turned into a scene of fear in the early hours of Friday when three armed men emerged from the darkness and erected a makeshift roadblock, lying in wait for their next victims.
At around 1:00am on April 10, 2026, the gang, wielding pangas and heavy sticks, struck at Kweeba Zone in Rubaga Division.
Their target came unsuspectingly: a boda boda rider transporting two passengers through the dimly lit road. Within moments, the trio forced them to stop, ordered them to the ground, and began demanding money, their weapons glinting with menace.
What could have escalated into a brutal robbery was abruptly cut short.
Police patrol officers, moving through the area, responded with speed and precision.
Closing in on the scene, they disrupted the attack before it could spiral further, confronting the suspects and sparking a brief pursuit. Two of the men were captured on the spot, while a third slipped into the night, evading arrest.
The suspects now in custody have been identified as William Engulu, 37, a private security guard, and PaulbMutabazi, 21, a resident of Kabaawo Zone, an arrest that has raised fresh concerns about the involvement of individuals entrusted with public safety in violent crime.
Authorities say the hunt for the fugitive is already underway, with investigators working to uncover whether the trio is linked to a wider string of panga robberies that have unsettled parts of Kampala in recent weeks.
