GGABA Community Mobile Court : The High Court has confirmed that murder suspect Christopher Okello Onyum is now in stable health and fit to stand trial, following a medical assessment presented at the start of proceedings on day three of his trial.

Presiding Judge Alice Komuhangi Khawuka read to court a medical report compiled by Dr. Kajjoba Charles K of Luzira Upper Prison, which indicated that Okello suffers from sickle cell disease and had experienced significant weight loss after reportedly going two months without medication.

However, the report confirmed that he has since resumed treatment while in custody and is now in stable condition.

When asked to confirm the contents of the report, Okello agreed with the findings and told court that he was fit to proceed with trial.

The medical report followed orders issued a day earlier, when the judge directed the officer in charge of Luzira Upper Prison to produce a detailed report on Okello’s health after he informed court that he was unwell and unable to stand trial.

Two witnesses testified today including Okello’s former landlords Mukasa Paul, a 43-year-old shoe vendor from Bbunga in Makindye and Joel Makaayi the estate at Sanwiza Estate Limited in Kisaasi, Nakawa

Mukasa told court that he first met Okello in November last year when he approached him seeking to rent a house.

Mukasa said he informed Okello that the rent was 150,000 shillings per month, with an additional 20,000 shillings for electricity, and that a minimum of three months’ rent was required upfront.

However, Okello initially paid for only one month, promising to clear the balance later, which he did within a week.

He added that although he offered to issue a receipt but Okello declined.

According to Mukasa, the accused occupied the house until the first week of March 2026 and maintained a good relationship with neighbours and children in the area.

He also noted that a woman he believed to be Okello’s mother visited briefly during his stay.

Another witness, Joel Makaayi, a 31-year-old estate manager at Sanwiza Estate Limited in Kisaasi, Nakawa Division, testified that Okello became his tenant in March this year after being introduced by a broker.

Makaayi told court that Okello agreed to pay 400,000 shillings monthly rent and was required to pay four months in advance.

He said Okello paid 100,000 shillings in cash as a broker’s fee and deposited 1.5 million shillings on the estate’s bank account, presenting a bank slip as proof of payment.

He further testified that Okello provided identification documents, including a passport and a driving licence purportedly from the United States, before signing a tenancy agreement and receiving house keys.

Makaayi added that a few days later, he visited Okello and introduced him to the Local Council leadership as part of standard procedure.

However, shortly afterward, he received a call informing him that Okello was wanted by police in connection with the killing of children in Ggaba.

He said he later went to the house with police officers, who asked him to open it for a search.

During the search, police reportedly recovered several items, including laptops, flash disks, knives, two mobile phones, and documents, among them two American passports.

The items were recorded and taken as exhibits, and Okello was arrested. He was also made to sign a search certificate.

Okello faces four counts of murder in connection with the deaths of infants identified as Gideon Eteku, Keisha Agenowroth, Ignitious Seruyange, and Ryan Odeke, all aged between one and two years.

Prosecution alleges that the offences were committed on April 2, 2026, at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Center in Kampala.

The trial has been adjourned tomorrow
