KAMPALA, Uganda —  Hon. Hellen Nakimuli, the Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala District, has reportedly passed away following complications arising from an unsuccessful surgical procedure, according to initial reports circulating within parliamentary and political circles.

The news of her passing has triggered widespread shock and grief among colleagues, constituents, and members of the public who have described her as a committed leader and a strong voice for Kalangala District.

While official confirmation from Parliament and family representatives is still awaited, multiple sources indicate that the legislator died shortly after undergoing surgery in a medical facility where she had been receiving treatment.

A parliamentary colleague, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the moment as “devastating and deeply painful for the entire House,” adding that “she was a dedicated representative who worked tirelessly for her people until her final days.”

Another local leader from Kalangala said, “We have lost not just a leader, but a person who understood the struggles of island communities and consistently pushed for their needs.”

Political Career and Public Service

Hon. Nakimuli served as the Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala District, representing the island district in Uganda’s Parliament.

Throughout her tenure, she was known for her engagement on issues affecting hard-to-reach communities, particularly in areas such as service delivery, transport challenges, education access, and health services in island districts.

She frequently participated in parliamentary discussions focusing on improving infrastructure and social services for fishing communities and remote populations within Lake Victoria’s islands.

Colleagues in Parliament often described her as a vocal advocate for local development and a legislator who maintained close contact with her constituents.

Reactions and Mourning

News of her death has sparked an outpouring of condolences on social and political platforms, with many Ugandans expressing sadness over her sudden passing.

Political observers have noted that her death leaves a gap in representation for Kalangala District at a time when island communities continue to face development and accessibility challenges.

A civil society representative said, “This is a significant loss. Leaders like her played a crucial role in ensuring that island districts are not left behind in national planning.”

Legacy

Hon. Nakimuli is remembered by many as a public servant who worked closely with local leaders and community members to highlight the unique needs of Kalangala District.

Her tenure in Parliament is expected to be revisited in the coming days as tributes continue to pour in from across the country.
