The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has cracked down on indiscipline within its ranks, ordering five district chairpersons to step aside after they defied party positions and contested as independent candidates in the recent elections.
NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong, said the action was taken by the party’s Central Executive Committee in line with the NRM constitution.
“Those who chose to contest as independents went against the party position. The Central Executive Committee directed that they step aside from their roles,” Todwong said while addressing district chairpersons and administrative secretaries at the party Secretariat in Kampala.
The affected officials will remain out of office pending a formal review by the Central Executive Committee, which will determine whether they can be reinstated or face further disciplinary action.
“I do not have the authority to reinstate them. Their return will depend on the decision of the Central Executive Committee,” he emphasized.
The move signals a firm stance by the ruling party to enforce discipline and protect internal cohesion following an election cycle marked by isolated cases of defiance against official party flag bearers.
Party officials say the decision is intended to deter future acts of indiscipline and reinforce adherence to party structures and electoral guidelines.
At the same meeting, Todwong commended district leaders for delivering a landslide electoral victory for the NRM, urging them to remain united and focused as the party prepares for the swearing-in of President Yoweri Museveni on May 12, 2026.
He called on party structures across the country to mobilize supporters to attend the inauguration, describing it as a historic moment for both the party and the nation.
The NRM is also planning a nationwide reconciliation process after the inauguration to address internal disagreements that emerged during the elections and to strengthen unity within its ranks.
“The strength of the NRM lies in unity and discipline. We must move forward together as one family,” Todwong said.
The meeting was attended by members of the Central Executive Committee and senior officials from the NRM Secretariat.
