KAMPALA, Uganda : Kawala Rachael, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, has confirmed that police at Jinja Road Division have successfully recovered a three-month-old baby boy who had been reported stolen in Kireka D Cell, Kireka Ward, Namugongo Division, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District.
According to police reports, on May 4, 2026, a woman identified as Amongin Brenda visited the home of her cousin, Akunyo Sarah, after traveling from Kalaki District. She reportedly informed the family that her visit was to facilitate the processing of her National ID under the express service.
The following day, May 5, at approximately 2:00 PM, the infant’s mother briefly stepped out of the house, leaving the baby asleep inside. Upon her return, she discovered that the child was missing. The suspect had also disappeared.
Police immediately launched coordinated operations, which led to the successful tracking and arrest of the suspect in Soroti District. The stolen baby was safely recovered.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect had allegedly deceived her husband into believing she was pregnant. On May 2, she reportedly asked him for money, claiming she needed to go to the hospital to deliver.
The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to face charges related to child abduction. Authorities have stated that arrangements are underway to reunite the baby with the family.
