KAMPALA — The Parliamentary Committee on Physical Infrastructure has summoned the Minister of Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, to appear before it on Today to explain the rising number of road accidents and the growing concerns over stalled road construction projects across the country.
The committee is seeking an update on the government’s efforts to improve road safety and an explanation of the challenges delaying the completion of several road infrastructure projects.
Lawmakers are expected to question the minister on the causes of the persistent road crashes, including the condition of roads, driver behaviour, enforcement of traffic regulations, and other factors contributing to road safety challenges in Uganda.
Byamukama will also be required to account for contractors who have abandoned or suspended work on road projects. Members of Parliament are expected to seek details on the affected projects, the contractors’ contractual obligations, and the measures the government is taking to ensure the projects are completed and future delays are avoided.
Road infrastructure remains a major government investment priority, given its critical role in facilitating trade, connecting communities, and improving access to essential services. However, delays in the execution of several projects have continued to raise concerns about project planning, supervision, contract management, and accountability.
The committee’s engagement with the minister is expected to provide Parliament with a clearer picture of the challenges facing Uganda’s transport sector and the government’s plans to improve road safety and accelerate the completion of delayed infrastructure projects.
