BUSIA-KENYA: Rt. Rev. Dr. Vitalis Job Ekuru has been consecrated and enthroned as the Fourth Anglican Bishop of Katakwa Diocese in Busia County, Kenya.
The solemn ceremony, presided over by the Archbishop of Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), Jackson Ole Sapit was graced by President William Ruto, Uganda’s Vice President Jessica Alupo and other senior church leaders and political dignitaries on Sunday July 26, 2026.
Bishop Ekuru takes over the mantle from Bishop John Ekude who officially retired after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65.
The ceremony marked the formal transfer of spiritual authority to Bishop Ekuru following an elaborate Anglican consecration service that included prayers, examination of faith, the laying on of hands, anointing with holy oil and the presentation of the symbols of episcopal office.
During the service, Archbishop Ole Sapit reminded the new bishop that his calling was one of servant leadership, urging him to safeguard the church’s doctrine, promote unity and care for the faithful.
“As a bishop you are called to lead in serving and caring for the people of God… You are to maintain the church’s discipline, guard her faith and promote her mission in the world,” the Archbishop said during the exhortation.
He informed the bishop that it was also his duty to watch over and pray for all those committed to his charge. “You are to know your people and be known by them. You are to ordain and commission new ministers, guiding those who serve with you and enabling them to fulfil their ministry,” Sapit said.
The Archbishop presented the Bible to new bishop, a ring, and a pastoral staff from Bishop okude as a constant reminder of his call to be a shepherd to the flock that Christ has put in his care, not by persuasion but by self-will.
President Ruto congratulated the new bishop and pledged to continue working with the church to deliver services to Kenyans.
VP Alupo delivered President Museveni’s message to H.E Ruto and appreciated the work of faith-based institutions especially in key areas of health, education, wealth creation, and building the moral integrity and discipline of citizens.
The VP was accompanied by the Minister of Ethics and Integrity Rose Lilly Akello, Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President Diana Mutasingwa, and the Teso Cultural leader, Emormor Paul Sande Emolot and his wife, Her Majesty Juliet Among Emolot among other dignitaries.
Bishop Ekuru publicly pledged to uphold the Constitution of the Anglican Church of Kenya and lead the Diocese with “truth, justice and love.

Rt. Rev. Ekuru is a highly experienced and result-driven priest, PhD holder, with over 20 years’ experience in ministry, education, and administration. Currently, he holds multiple leadership roles, including Diocesan House of Clergy Chairman, Archdeacon of Chamasiri Archdeaconry, adjunct lecturer of St. Paul’s University and Carlile College Katakwa satellite campus.
Biography
Rt. Rev. Ekuru was born on 5th August, 1972 at Aburi village, Kaborom location, Buongoma County.
He is the third born of eight children born to Mr. Peter Joshua Omai and Mary Auchokoit
