Tuzukuke Primary School Infrastructure Crisis Exposes Pupils to Safety Risks

The school, which has more than 250 pupils and staff, does not have an official pit latrine

Local government officials, residents and Rotarians from Kajjansi Town Council in Wakiso District have raised concern over the poor state of infrastructure at Tuzukuke Primary School, warning that the situation is putting pupils and staff at risk.

The government-aided school, owned by the Church of Uganda, reportedly lacks key facilities, including a pit latrine, teachers’ housing, a perimeter fence and adequate classroom blocks, some of which have developed cracks.

The concerns was raised during a medical transformation camp organised by the Rotary Club of Kitende Breeze at the school in Kitovu Village, Busiro South Constituency.

Nsiko Robinson, the LC1 General Secretary, said the government should take responsibility for improving the school’s infrastructure, noting that the institution was established by the Church of Uganda in 1958.

The school headmistress, Aturinda Victorious, said the school faces serious security and sanitation challenges due to the lack of essential facilities.

She said the school, which has more than 250 pupils and staff, does not have an official pit latrine and is currently relying on the church’s sanitation facilities, which were designed to accommodate about 60 Christians attending Sunday services.

Aturinda appealed to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the Ministry of Education and Sports to intervene and address what she described as a difficult and embarrassing situation for the school community.

She also expressed concern about the absence of a perimeter fence and a security guard, saying this leaves school property vulnerable to vandalism.

However, Aturinda commended the Rotary Club of Kitende Breeze, led by its president, Rtn. Richard Mujjuzi, for intervening to support the school’s infrastructure improvement efforts.

“We strongly appreciate the great work being done by the Rotary Club of Kitende Breeze, led by Mujjuzi and his team, for stepping forward to invest resources in supporting this school,” Aturinda said.

Mujjuzi said the medical camp was part of the club’s flagship signature project and revealed that the club had already installed classroom partitions, enabling pupils to study in properly demarcated classrooms.

The visiting Rotary chief, Damulira, said the school project had exposed deep-rooted challenges that require urgent government attention, particularly because the school is supported through government funding.

The medical camp attracted more than 2,000 residents, who received various medical services provided by teams from the Ministry of Health and Kajjansi Health Centre IV.

According to Sister Namutosi Peace, an enrolled nurse at Kajjansi Health Centre IV, the turnout was one of the highest recorded for the medical outreach.
