Police in central Uganda have arrested a man after he allegedly killed his wife in a domestic violence incident in Kyankwanzi District.
The couple, who lived together in a single rented room in Kalungu LC1, Kigando Sub-county, had a nine-month-old daughter.
Neighbours and local leaders said their relationship had been troubled by frequent domestic disputes.
“This incident followed a series of domestic squabbles between the couple,” said Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Regional Police spokesperson.
He said the victim, Kolodina Nyiramuhirwe, 34, was allegedly attacked by her husband, Emmanuel Nshimimana, using sharp objects.
After the alleged killing on Friday (August 7, 2026), Nshimimana is said to have locked his wife’s body inside their home and did not immediately tell neighbours what had happened.
In the early hours of Saturday, at about 01:00 local time, he reportedly took the couple’s nine-month-old daughter to a neighbour, Dolotina Uwimana, telling her that his wife had suddenly fallen ill.
He then went to Kigando Sub-county Police Station, where he reported that his wife had died.
A police homicide team was subsequently sent to the couple’s home. Officers opened the house and found Nyiramuhirwe’s body inside.
Police said the woman had suffered severe injuries to her neck, head and hands.
A post-mortem examination was conducted at the scene and statements were taken from witnesses as investigators began piecing together what led to the death.
A search of the area also led to the recovery of a blood-stained knife, a panga and a hammer from a pit latrine. Police said the items were recovered as part of the investigation.
The suspect remains in police custody as inquiries continue.
