Police in Nsangi are investigating a suspected suffocation incident that killed a 12-year-old boy and left four other people unconscious at a home in Wakiso District, authorities said on Thursday.
The incident occurred at about 9 a.m. on Wednesday in Naggalabi Cell, Kyengera Town Council, where the victims were found unconscious inside their residence.
The deceased was identified as Marvin Mutonzi, a juvenile resident of the area.
“Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and the exact cause of the victims’ condition,” said Kampala Metropoluran Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala, who confirmed that the four survivors were taken to Mulago Hospital for treatment.
Preliminary police information indicates that a housemaid placed beans on a charcoal stove in the garage at about 7am before locking the house while other occupants were asleep.
She then continued with her household chores, police said.
The victims, including two juveniles, their mother and the housemaid, were later found unconscious.
Police suspect that fumes from the charcoal stove may have caused the incident, but said the precise cause had not been established.
The four survivors remain under medical care, while Marvin’s body was taken to the Mulago Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Police said investigations were continuing to determine what happened inside the house and establish the cause of death.
