Police in Wakiso District are investigating the death of a 35-year-old man who was allegedly stabbed following a dispute over money during a card game locally known as ‘Matatu’ at a bar in Kireku Zone, Bweyogerere Division.
The deceased, identified as Hamza Nuwamanya, was reportedly playing cards with other people at Twine’s Bar at about 1am on Monday when a disagreement broke out over Shs2,000.
“The deceased picked money amounting to Shs2,000 belonging to Julius Katabani, which resulted in a quarrel between the two,” Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Racheal Kawala said.
According to police, the bar owner intervened, paid the disputed amount and ordered Nuwamanya to leave the premises.
However, Katabani allegedly followed him outside, where the confrontation continued.
Nuwamanya reportedly punched Katabani before he was allegedly stabbed with a knife.
Nuwamanya was rushed to Kireku Health Centre before being referred to Mulago Hospital for further treatment. He was later pronounced dead on Monday afternoon.
Police have recorded statements from witnesses and other people of interest as investigations continue.
The deceased’s body has been taken to Kampala City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Three people have been arrested to assist with the investigation, while efforts are continuing to trace and arrest the main suspect.
