A one-year-old child had part of his right foot cut off in a panga attack during a domestic dispute in central Uganda, in an incident that also left the toddler’s mother with serious injuries.
The child was being carried on his mother’s back when the attack happened on Wednesday morning in Kinoni village, Lubale Parish, Kyera Sub-county in Sembabule District.
Police have ar
rested a 30-year-old man, Muhwezi Yoweri, in connection with the attack on his sister-in-law, Kamusiime Faith, 20, and her child.
“Upon a domestic misunderstanding, the suspect picked a panga and cut the victim in the face and on the back,” police spokesperson Twaaha Kasirye said.
“In the process, the suspect also cut the one-year-old baby’s right foot,” he added.
The suspect is alleged to have fled the scene after the attack, triggering a search by police and members of the community.
Kasirye said Muhwezi was later arrested in Rwemikoma village in neighbouring Kazo District as he allegedly tried to escape further into the area.
The attack reportedly took place at the compound of the suspect’s mother, which is shared by the people involved in the dispute.
Police said the disagreement had its roots in a seemingly ordinary household matter: the suspect was reportedly unhappy that his sister-in-law prepared food whenever visitors came, rather than his wife.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue into the attempted murder case.
