KIRYANDONGO, Uganda — One person has been killed and four others injured in a road crash along the Kampala-Gulu Highway in Kiryandongo District, police said.
The crash occurred at about 6:15am on Thursday at Latworo and involved a Toyota Hiace minibus, registration UBP 015X, and a Fuso truck, registration UA 350DF.
Preliminary findings indicate that the Fuso truck suffered a tyre burst and was attempting to find a safe place to stop when the minibus collided with it from behind, police said.
The injured victims were taken to Lacor Hospital for treatment, while the body of the deceased was transported to Kiryandongo Hospital mortuary.
Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, urged motorists to exercise greater caution, particularly when approaching or following vehicles that may be slowing down or stopping.
“We urge all drivers and motorists to maintain a safe following distance, observe prescribed speed limits and ensure their vehicles are properly maintained,” Kananura said.
He also called on road users to remain vigilant and exercise maximum caution to reduce crashes on Uganda’s highways.
Police said investigations into the circumstances of the crash are continuing.
