Kid Fox returns home childless after 14 years in Japan as he plots music comeback

Ugandan dancehall veteran Steven Kiggundu, better known as Kid Fox or King Steven, has returned home after 14 years in Japan, marking the end of a long chapter away from Uganda’s entertainment scene.

The musician, who was once a familiar name on the country’s radio stations and mainstream music circuit, is now looking to rebuild his career and reconnect with his roots after more than a decade abroad.
Speaking in a recent interview with Galaxy TV, Kid Fox said one of his immediate priorities was spending time with his mother and other relatives after years away from his family.
“It has been 14 years away from my family of origin. I have come to see my mother,” he said.
The veteran performer also spoke candidly about his personal life, saying he did not marry or have children during his time in Japan.
“I never left behind any family of my own. I went solo. I don’t have a child nor a wife,” he said.
His return comes at a time when several of the musicians who were active alongside him during his peak years have continued to build careers, families and businesses in Uganda’s rapidly changing entertainment industry.
For Kid Fox, however, the years in Japan represented a different path. His move overseas took him away from the centre of Uganda’s music scene as he pursued a life outside the spotlight.
Now back in Uganda, the musician appears determined to reopen that chapter of his career.
He is reportedly exploring collaborations with established Ugandan performers, including Ziza Bafana, Weasel and Sheebah, as he considers how to reconnect with a new generation of listeners while drawing on the reputation he built earlier in his career.
Kid Fox’s return also comes as Uganda’s music industry has evolved considerably during his absence, with new artists, digital platforms and changing audience tastes reshaping the business.
The musician has acknowledged that restoring his place in the industry will require more than simply returning home.
For now, he says his priorities extend beyond music.

Reconnecting with his mother and relatives is an important part of his homecoming, while a return to recording and performing could offer him a second act in a career that once made him a recognisable figure in Ugandan dancehall.
Reflecting on his years in Japan, Kid Fox also discussed relationships and why he did not settle down there. He said he found dating difficult and chose not to enter a relationship simply for the sake of doing so.
“I could not do this because I have principles,” he said.
After 14 years away, Kid Fox is therefore returning to a Uganda that has changed significantly since his departure. Whether his planned musical comeback will restore his former prominence remains to be seen, but the veteran artist appears ready to begin a new chapter on his own terms.
