WAKISO, Uganda, (UGNEWSLINE) — A 38-year-old woman is expected to appear in court after being arrested over allegations that she severely beat her two young daughters and burnt them with a heated knife in Wakiso District, police say.
The children, aged seven and eight, were rescued after police received information about the alleged abuse in Kireka Biira, Nakabugo Parish, Wakiso Sub-county, on Wednesday, October 28.
Police said they received the information at about 1pm and subsequently arrested the suspect, identified as Nasanga Sophia, who is the children’s biological mother.
According to police, the woman allegedly used a knife heated in a charcoal stove to burn the children after beating them. The circumstances surrounding the alleged assault were not immediately clear beyond the account provided by the suspect during questioning.
During interrogation, Nasanga reportedly told investigators that she had acted because the children were disrespectful and had allegedly stolen Shs 5,000.
The allegations have drawn renewed attention to child protection and the risks children face within their own homes, where parents and guardians are expected to provide care and protection.
Rachael Kawala, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, condemned the alleged abuse and urged members of the public to report suspected cases of violence against children.
“We strongly condemn all acts of child torture and abuse, regardless of who is responsible, even if the perpetrators are the children’s biological parents,” Kawala said.
She called on the public to desist from all forms of child abuse and report suspected cases to the relevant authorities.
Police had not provided further details about the children’s medical condition and where they are receiving treatment.
