MUKONO District (UGNEWSLINE) – Two three-month-old female infants have died after a fire swept through a wooden settlement at Kitosi Landing Site in Lwomolo Parish, Koome Sub County, Mukono District.
The fire broke out at about 5:00pm on October 7, 2026, destroying about 12 houses and property belonging to residents.
The two infants were reportedly inside a room that had been locked with a padlock when the blaze started, leaving them unable to escape.
Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, said police responded to the scene and recovered the bodies of the two infants.
He said investigations are underway to establish the exact cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage.
Police have not made any arrests in connection with the incident, as investigations continue to establish what sparked the fire and identify other people affected by the blaze.
Police have meanwhile urged parents and guardians not to leave children unattended or lock them inside rooms where they could be trapped during emergencies.
Residents of wooden settlements have also been advised to take precautions against fires by keeping sources of ignition away from flammable materials and ensuring that children have access to safe exits.
Police said they will continue engaging residents on fire prevention and safety measures to reduce the risk of similar tragedies.
