Op-Ed (UGNEWSLINE) – There is a quiet moment that unfolds every day in classrooms across Uganda. It is the moment a girl who has always sat silently at the back of the room raises her hand to answer a mathematics question. It is the moment a learner who believed science was for “other people” begins asking questions about machines, medicine, climate change, artificial intelligence, agriculture, or the stars above her village. It is the moment a young person who once doubted her own abilities begins to imagine herself as an engineer, researcher, innovator, teacher, scientist, or problem-solver.

These moments may seem small, yet they have the power to change the trajectory of a life and, ultimately, the future of a nation.

At Teach for Uganda (T4U), we witness these transformations every day. We know the power of a teacher who looks a learner in the eye and says, “You can do this.”

That belief sits at the heart of our mission: to nurture leaders committed to advancing access to quality education for children in underserved communities. We are committed to making every scholar count. Yet the reality facing many learners remains sobering. Recent education data shows that 82% of children aged 10 who are enrolled in school cannot read and comprehend an age-appropriate story, while 52.2% cannot perform Primary Two-level mathematics.

These are more than statistics. They represent children whose dreams are being limited before they have the chance to take shape.

When a learner cannot read with understanding, her world becomes smaller. When she cannot reason mathematically, opportunities begin to disappear long before she can see them. And when a girl grows up without seeing women represented in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Uganda loses more than talent; it loses imagination, innovation, leadership, and possibility.

The barriers are well known. Quality education remains out of reach for many families. Funding does not yet match the scale of need. Policy decisions often struggle to reach the realities of rural classrooms. And too few change-makers are equipped to drive solutions from within the communities that need them most.

This Is the Gap Teach for Uganda Exists to Close

Through the STEM Fellowship, implemented under our Leaders in Teaching programme, we are taking an important step forward. Building on our strong foundation in primary education, the Fellowship extends our classroom leadership model into secondary school STEM learning, at a critical stage when girls and young women are making decisions that shape their confidence, career pathways, and participation in Uganda’s future economy.

Our experience in Foundational Literacy and Numeracy has shown us what becomes possible when teaching is intentional, data-informed, and responsive to the realities of every learner. Children begin to read with confidence. They count, reason, participate, and engage. Most importantly, they begin to believe in themselves again.

The lesson is clear: young people are not failing because they lack ability. Too often, they simply have not been given the support they need to thrive.

The STEM Fellowship is therefore about much more than placing additional mathematics and science teachers in classrooms.

It Is an Investment in Leadership

By placing female STEM Fellows in underserved secondary schools, we strengthen teaching while creating something equally powerful: visibility.

These women become mentors, role models, and living proof of what is possible.

They help girls see STEM not as a distant world reserved for a select few, but as a pathway connected to their own lives, communities, and aspirations. When a girl learns mathematics with confidence, she is doing more than solving equations. She is learning to think critically, approach problems systematically, and face challenges with courage.

And when she sees a female STEM Fellow teaching, leading, and serving in her school, she is seeing more than a teacher. She is seeing a future version of herself.

That Is Why Partnership Matters

No single organisation can solve Uganda’s education challenge alone. The scale of the task demands a collective effort from government, schools, communities, civil society, the private sector, and development partners.

Lasting change will require all of us to move together with urgency, purpose, and conviction.

Because when we invest in girls’ education, we are not simply improving classroom outcomes. We are expanding the pool of innovators, scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, teachers, researchers, and leaders who will shape Uganda’s future.

The question is no longer whether girls belong in STEM. They do.

The question is whether we are prepared to create the conditions that allow every girl to see herself there, believe she belongs there, and have the opportunity to thrive there.
